Chairperson's Statement

Welcome to the Hartsdale Fire District.

Our fire district was established in 1904 by local volunteers and transitioned to public funding in 1925 to ensure reliable and sustainable operations. Today, we have thirty-six career firefighters and fire officers, led by our fire chief, who serve the district with professionalism and dedication and oversight by the Board of Fire Commissioners.

EMERGENCY SERVICES: Our team delivers a full set of emergency services, including:

  • FIRE SUPPRESSION: Rapid response to fires in residential, commercial and public spaces, utilizing advanced equipment and training to save and protect lives and property.
  • EMERGENCY MEDIAL SERVICES (EMS): First responder medical care that provides life-saving intervention for accidents, illnesses and other emergencies.
  • TECHNICAL RESCUE: Specialized operations for vehicle extrications, confined space rescues, water rescues and hazardous materials responses.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES The Hartsdale Fire District is committed to actively engage with our community to promote education and risk reduction, our programs include:

  • COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION: We organize and manage prevention programs tailored to local needs using data-driven risk assessments to identify and address hazards.  These initiatives are designed to inform residents and policymakers about the scope and effectiveness of our services and to close the gaps between current and target performance benchmarks.
  • HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLNESS PROGRAMS: We prioritize the well-being of firefighters, officers and the community through ongoing health and safety initiatives in compliance with New York State Labor Laws, US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards.
  • STRATEGIC MASTER PLANNING: The district develops long-term strategies and  plans for administration, operations and financial outlook, that ensures sustainable growth and transparent decision-making.
  • PUBLIC EDUCATION OUTREACH: Educational programs and community engagement initiatives that raise awareness about fire prevention, emergency preparedness and safety best practices, delivered as safety seminars, school visits and babysitter’s class using realistic training props and scenarios.

BOARD OF FIRE COMMISSIONERS The Board of Fire Commissioners is committed to responsible stewardship of public funds, ensuring transparency and prioritizing safety and well-being if all who live, work and visit the Hartsdale Fire District. We are comprised of five Hartsdale residents serving five-year terms and providing overall district policy and oversees the district administration, finance and operations in accordance with New York State law. 

  •  GOVERNANCE AND POLICY OVERSIGHT   Commissioners establish and oversee district policies, ensuring all operations comply with New York State Law, OSHA Rules and  Regulations, NFPA standards and fire service best practices.
  • ADMININISTRATIVE OPERATIONS: Commissioners supervise and provide leadership and guidance to the district administration including personnel management, purchasing and procurement policy and procedures and strategic planning.
  • FINANCIAL PRACTICES: Commissioners are responsible for oversight of the district’s financial management including approving annual budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of funds and overseeing  annual audits and financial reporting.
  • TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY: The Board holds monthly public meetings and periodic working sessions where our financial decisions and district actions are subject to public review. We prioritize transparency and accountability to fortify the public’s trust.
  • COMMUNITY SAFETY AND WELL-BEING: Commissioners prioritize the safety and well-being of all who live, work and visit the district. We ensure resources are used to maximize service quality
