General Information

What areas does the Hartsdale Fire District serve? 

The Hartsdale Fire District provides fire protection and emergency services to the Hartsdale section of the Town of Greenburgh, covering approximately 4.5 square miles.

Where are your fire stations located? 

The District operates out of two stations:

Station 1:  25 South Central Ave, Hartsdale, New York, 10530

Station 2:  300 West Hartsdale Ave, Hartsdale, New York, 10530

Why did a different department respond to my emergency? 

Hartsdale Fire District has mutual aid agreements with neighboring departments to ensure a rapid response during high call volumes or specific emergencies.

What does does a firefighter's workday entail? 

When not responding to emergencies, duties include station and apparatus maintenance, community outreach and events participation, public education, building inspections, and ongoing training.  Emergency incidents may alter daily routines.

 

Emergency Services

What number should I call in an emergency? 

Always dial 911 for emergencies. Calls are dispatched through Westchester County Emergency Communications.

Does the Fire District provide EMS services? 

Yes. The Hartsdale Fire District provides emergency medical services (EMS) and works in coordination with other local emergency responders, including the Greenburgh Police Department, to ensure rapid and effective response.

What types of emergencies do you respond to? 

Firefighter respond to a wide range of calls, including:

  • Structure and vehicle fires
  • Medical emergencies
  • Fire alarms
  • Hazardous conditions
  • Rescue situations

Community & Public Services

Can I schedule a tour of a fire station? 

Yes! The District welcomes community members, school groups, and organizations to visit the fire stations.  Please contact us in advance to schedule a tour through our "Event Requests" page.

Do you participate in community events? 

Absolutely.  The Hartsdale Fire District is proud to be a part of the community and participates in local events, parades, and public educaiton programs throughout the year. 

Can the Fire District attend my community event? 

We do our best to accommodate requests for appearances at community events, depending on availability and emergency response needs.  Please reach out through our website under "Event Requests" to submit a request.

 

Fire Prevention & Safety

Do you offer fire safety inspections or education? 

Yes.  The District provides fire prevention services, including inspections and public educaiton to help keep residents and businesses safe.

How can I make my home safer from fire? 

We recommend:

  • Installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Creating and practicing a home escape plan
  • Keeping fire extinguishers accessible
  • Avoiding overloaded electrical outlets

 

Employment & Careers

How do I become a firefighter with the Hartsdale Fire District? 

Firefighter positions are typically filled through the Westchester County Civil Service process.  Candidates must meet all county and state requirements and pass the appropriate examinations.

Can I transfer from another fire department? 

Transfers are subject to civil service rules, District policies, and available positions.  Candidates must met all applicable requirements.

How is the Fire District funded? 

The Hartsdale Fire District is a special district funded through property taxes within the district boundaries.

Who oversees the Fire District? 

The District is goverened by an elected Board of Fire Commissioners who are responsible for oversight, budgeting,  and policy decisions.

Who do I contact for non-emergency questions?

Operations & Transparency

Are Fire District meetings open to the public? 

Yes. Board of Fire Commissioners meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend.

Where can I find meeting agendas or minutes? 

Meeting documents are typically posted on the District website or available upon request about two (2) weeks after the meeting.
