Board of Fire Commissioners Election Information

The Hartsdale Fire District conducts its annual election in accordance with New York State Town Law, providing residents the opportunity to elect members of the Board of Fire Commissioners and vote on district propositions.

Election Overview

  • The Annual Fire District Election is held on the second Tuesday in December each year
  • Voting takes place at Station 1 located at 25 South Central Ave.
  • Polls are generally open between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM

Board of Fire Commissioners

  • The Fire District is governed by a Board of Fire Commissioners
  • Commissioners are elected by district residents
  • Terms of Office:
    • Standard terms are five (5) years
    • Terms are staggered, with at least one seat up for election each year
    •  In the event of a vacancy, a Commissioner may be elected to serve the remainder of an unexpired term, rather than a full five-year term
  • Compensation:
    • Commissioners serve without compensation

Voter Eligibility

  • To vote  in a Fire District Election, you must:
    • Be a citizen of the United States
    • Be a registered voter with the Westchester County Board of Elections under permanent personal registration no later than the date specified in the Notice of Annual Election for that year
    • Be a resident of the Hartsdale Fire District for at least 30 days prior to the election
    • Be 18 years of age or older

Candidate Eligibility & Filing

  • To run for the office of Fire Commissioner, an individual must:
    • Be a resident of Hartsdale Fire district
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Be a registered voter
    • File a petition with the Fire District Secretary in the Fire District Admin. Office located at 300 West Hartsdale Ave.

    • Petition forms are available from the Fire District Secretary upon request.

  • Petitions must:
    • Be submitted by the deadline established each year
    • Contain the required number of valid signatures from district residents (at least 25 signatures from qualified voters), as required by New York State law

Election Notices

  • The Fire District publishes an official Notice of Annual Election each year, which includes:
    • Date, time, and location of the election
    • Offices and/or propositions to be voted on
    • Candidate filing deadlines
  • Notices are posted on the district website, in the local news paper,  and in designated public locations in accordance with New York State Law

Election Officials & Roles

The Annual Fire District Election is conducted by designated Election officials to ensure the process is fair, accurate, and in compliance with New York State law.

  • Fire District Secretary
    • Serves as the primary administrator of the election
    • Accepts and reviews candidate petitions
    • Maintains official election records
    • Issues legal notices and election information
    • Coordinates election logistics
  • Election Inspectors
    • Appointed by the Board of Fire Commissioners
    • Responsible for overseeing the voting process at the polling location
    • Verify voter eligibility
    • Distribute ballots and assist voters as needed
    • Maintain order at the polls
  • Chair Election Inspector
    • Supervises all Election Inspectors
    • Ensures procedures are followed throughout the election
    • Oversees the counting of ballots
    • Reports results to the Fire District Secretary and Board

Election Results

  • Election results are certified by the Fire District and made available to the public following the election
